DOST-PHIVOLCS Conducts Virtual Training on GeoRiskPH Platforms for the Province of Agusan del Norte

DOST-PHIVOLCS conducted the “Data Managers' Virtual Training for the GeoRiskPH Integrated Platform (GRIP)” and 3-day training workshop entitled “Virtual Training on the Use of GeoRiskPH Platforms” for the Province of Agusan del Norte last March 25 and March 30 - April 1, 2022. A total of 15 participants from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) and the cities and municipalities of Agusan del Norte including Butuan City, Cabadbaran City, Carmen, Las Nieves, Magallanes, Remedios T. Romualdez, and Tubay were present during the training. All participants were given user accounts to access the GeoRiskPH Integrated Platform and GeoMapperPH application. The data managers’ training is a half-day training course designed for personnel who will serve as the data manager/s of their respective LGUs. As data managers, the participants were taught how to create and manage user accounts, and upload data to be added for data collection and visualization in Agusan del Norte’s GeoMapperPH application. The training aims to enhance the capacity of the province of Agusan del Norte through building their exposure database using GeoMapperPH. PHIVOLCS Deputy Director Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol discussed science, technology, and innovation solutions in risk communication and disaster management and highlighted how these enable and empower local governments and communities during his opening message. Day 1 of the training featured the introduction to the GeoRisk Philippines Initiative and GeoMapperPH followed by a lecture on how to sign-in to the GeoRiskPH Integrated Platform and access the web and mobile applications of GeoMapperPH. The features and functionalities of GeoMapperPH were discussed and the participants were taught how to populate and manage their exposure data using the GeoMapperPH web application and Google Street View. Day 2 started with a short recap followed by a lecture on building typology by Dr. Rhommel Grutas. After a health break and quick icebreaker, the use of the GeoMapperPH mobile application was presented. A demo and hands-on activity were conducted where participants digitized building footprints using the GeoMapperPH mobile application. The last day of the training focused on database management in GeoMapperPH where the participants learned how to maximize the information they have by using the data query feature of the GeoMapperPH. It was then followed by lectures on the other platforms of GeoRiskPH specifically, HazardHunterPH and GeoAnalyticsPH. A design thinking activity was also held to identify the strengths and opportunities to improve GeoRiskPH’s products and services based on the needs of the LGUs and stakeholders. The training concluded with a closing message from Ms. Lorna Bayer, chief of the Agusan del Norte PDRRMO Operations and Warning Division, and Ms. Mabelline Cahulogan, head of the Geomatics and Hazard Assessment Service Section of DOST-PHIVOLCS. The speakers and facilitators of the training consisted of Dr. Rommel Grutas, Mr. Hanz Cesar Alejandria, Ms. Ynna Patricia Aquino, Ms. Maeryck Justinne Bernardo, Mr. Conrado Favis, Ms. Honey Abalos, Ms. Marjoleen Belviz, and Mr. Keith Peña, assisted by the Technical Support team of Mr. Richard Sulit, Mr. John Harold Tabuzo, Ms. Princess Di Pascual, and Ms. Geleen Rica Javellana.
