The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) collaborates with the Department of Trade and Industry – National Capital Region (DTI-NCR) to bring the GeoRiskPH Platforms to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in Metro Manila through virtual capacity building. This is in line with the Shared Service Facilities (SSF) Project of DTI, which aims to enhance the MSME’s competitiveness by providing access to advanced technologies such as the GeoRiskPH Integrated System. A virtual training session was hosted by DTI-NCR on 11 October 2024 via Zoom Platform with a total of forty-four (44) participants, consisting of MSMEs, SSF cooperators and DTI-NCR personnel. Officer-in-Charge Regional Director of DTI-NCR Winston T. Singun opened the program with welcoming remarks, emphasizing the significance of the GeoMapperPH Application in updating the statistics of MSMEs to aid disaster planning and decision-making. Ms. Princess Di E. Pascual, Science Research Specialist II from DOST-PHIVOLCS, commenced the training proper by introducing the GeoRisk Philippines Initiative. This initial lecture provided the participants an insight on the history of GeoRiskPH as well as the features and applications of various tools such as HazardHunterPH, GeoAnalyticsPH, GeoMapperPH and PlanSmart, in hazard risk assessment and planning purposes. For the first activity, the participants accessed the GeoMapperPH Web Application using the two-step login authentication system guided by GeoRiskPH Science Research Specialist I, Mr. Theodore E. Padilla. Ms. Valkyrie Arcee M. Cabalo, also a Science Research Specialist I, led the demonstration and hands-on activity on using the web application. During this demonstration, participants learned how to create features by digitizing their own commercial buildings and how to update information on these buildings using GeoMapperPH. Following the hands-on activity, participants took part in an interactive Q&A session with the facilitators to clarify key topics covered in the training. DOST-PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol concluded the training by delivering a closing message highlighting the importance of utilizing available data and technology to support MSMEs in disaster risk management and business continuity planning. Collaborative efforts between government and private organizations, such as this collaboration between DOST-PHIVOLCS, DTI-NCR and MSMEs, play a crucial role in strengthening disaster planning and mitigation. By gathering the necessary data and resources, these partnerships can create new strategies to address risks and reduce vulnerabilities. This joint approach not only enhances the capacity to manage disasters but also empowers communities and local businesses to recover faster, ensuring sustainable development and long-term resilience.
