DOST-PHIVOLCS Conducts Training on the Use of GeoRiskPH Platforms for the Department of Trade and Industry Region 2

On July 3, 2024, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry Region 2 (DTI Region 2), hosted a comprehensive training session on the utilization of GeoRiskPH platforms, aimed at enhancing the region's disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The event, held via Zoom, was attended by a total of forty-seven (47) participants composed of a diverse group of professionals including business councilors, trade-industry development specialists, and other technical personnel from various DTI Region 2 offices. The training commenced with a warm welcome from Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Development Division Officer-in-Charge, Desiree Angolluan. Her opening remarks highlighted the importance of leveraging technological innovations in disaster risk management to safeguard businesses and communities and ensure sustainable development as part of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for Strengthening Disaster Resilience of MSMEs in the Philippines. The first lecture, Introduction to the GeoRisk Philippines Initiative, was delivered by Mr. John Harold Tabuzo. He provided an insightful overview of the GeoRiskPH platforms, emphasizing their significance in assessing hazards and formulating risk reduction strategies. Mr. Tabuzo elaborated on the key components of the initiative, which include GeoMapperPH, HazardHunterPH, and GeoAnalyticsPH. He underscored how these tools collectively enhance data collection, analysis, and visualization, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions. Following the introductory lecture, Engr. Alicia Rose Advincula guided the participants through the process of signing in to the GeoMapperPH web application. Her step-by-step instructions ensured that all attendees could easily access the platform. The third lecture, led by Engr. Catherine Rose Tatlonghari, focused on the practical aspects of using GeoMapperPH. Participants were taught how to create and edit features within the web application, specifically how to digitize business enterprises on GeoMapperPH. This skill is crucial for assessing the economic impact of potential hazards and planning effective response strategies. This lecture was followed by a detailed demonstration on the use of GeoMapperPH, conducted by Ms. Jaztine Linato. She showcased the platform’s features, guiding participants through various functions. The training concluded with a message from the Technical Assistant of DTI Region 2, Ms. Marygrace Z. Ramos. She expressed her gratitude to all participants for their active engagement and to the facilitators for their expertise and dedication. The training on the use of GeoRiskPH platforms was a significant step towards strengthening the disaster risk management capabilities of DTI Region 2. Through lectures and live demonstrations, participants gained valuable skills and knowledge, empowering them to utilize GeoRiskPH tools effectively. This initiative exemplifies the collaborative efforts needed to build a safer and more resilient future for all.
