As part of a broader initiative to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience in the region, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology Region VIII, successfully conducted the Training on the Use of the GeoRiskPH Platform at Biliran Province State University on September 2-3, 2024. The training brought together thirty-five (35) participants from various agencies, including the Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO), Municipal and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices, the Municipal Planning and Development Office, and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). Spearheaded by Dr. Rufino Mengote, the DOST VIII DRRM Focal Person and Assistant Regional Director for Finance and Administrative Services, this initiative aims to enhance community safety and effectively reduce and manage the impacts of disasters throughout the region. The training began with opening remarks from Dr. John Glenn OcaƱa, Regional Director of DOST Region VIII, emphasizing the importance of the GeoRiskPH platform in providing essential geohazard information and hazard assessment tools that facilitate data-driven and innovative solutions. This was followed by a video opening message from Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol, Director of DOST-PHIVOLCS. He highlighted key tools that empower data-driven planning and informed decision-making using the GeoRiskPH platform. He further added that the training is designed to provide the essential knowledge and skills needed to effectively fulfill the roles in creating safer communities. He encouraged everyone to seize the opportunity to learn, grow, and collaborate with one another. The training showcased the GeoRiskPH platform, including GeoMapperPH, HazardHunterPH, and GeoAnalyticsPH, accompanied by engaging hands-on activities. Participants were guided on utilizing the GeoMapperPH web and mobile applications. Additionally, informative lectures on earthquake and volcanic hazards and disaster preparedness were conducted to equip participants with the essential knowledge needed to effectively respond to disasters and bolster community resilience. Furthermore, they had the opportunity to visualize their digitized building footprints using GeoRiskPH Web Services integrated using QGIS software, providing valuable practical experience in geospatial data analysis. In a collaborative work planning activity, selected participants presented their action plans and engaged in discussions on integrating the GeoRiskPH platform into their respective roles while also outlining their future strategies and preparedness initiatives. One of the presenters, Mr. Arlo Millang from the Provincial DRRM Office of Biliran, shared their experiences and action plans of their office. This includes organizing community workshops that utilize the assessments and reports from HazardHunterPH and GeoAnalyticsPH. This aims to educate residents about local hazards and safety measures. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of generating an exposure database for the formulation of the Comprehensive Disaster Risk Assessment (CDRA) and other strategic plans, leveraging the various GeoRiskPH platforms. His efforts were further recognized when he received the Best Surveyor Award for creating the highest number of building footprints during the training. The two-day event concluded with the presentation of certificates to the participants, marking their achievements and dedication throughout the training, followed by a closing message from Dr. Romeo L. Dignos, Provincial Director of DOST Biliran. The training on the use of the GeoRiskPH Platform in various offices and LGUs across Eastern Visayas marked a significant advancement in enhancing disaster risk management preparedness. This collaborative effort highlighted the importance of leveraging modern technology to strengthen resilience. DOST-PHIVOLCS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the different LGUs in Eastern Visayas by providing innovative tools and up-to-date knowledge to help reduce disaster risks and safeguard communities.
